Our client, EESL, had employed a management accountant on a salary of £40,000 and also had an unqualified bookkeeper on the payroll. Of course, the salary of the accountant was not the only cost. There is employer’s NI on top of that, there are holidays and sick leave pay and there are idle times.

We had initially been called in to take over the tax returns and year end work for the business, but our conversation progressed to other aspects of accounting for the business. The then management accountant was leaving! During our talks we felt that the current bookkeeper was under utilised. We made a proposal that we would train the current bookkeeper so that a lot more of the complex data entry was done in house (but now at a much cheaper rate) and then we would take over the management accounting function, which included the production and analysis of monthly management accounts, audit of the bookkeeper’s work, ensuring that all accounts are reconciled, checking all the VAT returns, submitting them as well as producing any other reports required by our client and producing the payroll and P11Ds.

We have now been working with this client for a few years. Their total accounting costs, taking into account the salaries of those who have an input into the accounting function, was reduced by over £25,000! Our fees to this client amounts to just £15,000 per year which includes the year end accounts and the tax returns!! You could not employ a qualified accountant for £15,000! The main source of the savings in this case is of course the salary and the employer’s NI for the management accountant. Also, because we don’t get paid during idle times and we don’t get holiday pay or sick pay our client saves even more.
